The FGS also sends out weekly award announcements with upcoming deadlines, so keep your eyes open for that.

Other major scholarships

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
CIHR offers funding for M.Sc. and Ph.D students as well as for postdoctoral fellows in the field of Health Sciences through a variety of scholarships and training programs. As most of these scholarships are based on national competition, they  require you to be either permanent resident or citizen of Canada, but there might be some exceptions for certain training programs. Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
As another national agency, NSERC offers scholarships on the masters, doctoral and postdoctoral level in a very broad range of research areas. Therefore, funding through NSERC again requires you to be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada. For more detailed information please visit NSERC

Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC)
MHRC is a provincial scholarship program, and therefore no citizenship is required. The application process begins usually in December and involves an online system, coupled with the “common CV”. It is also important to know, that MHRC cooperates with a variety of institutions in Winnipeg to make the application process easier. One application will enter you in the competition of joint scholarships with CancerCareManitoba, Health Sciences Center Foundation, St. Boniface Research Foundation, Manitoba Graduate Scholarship, Lung Association of Manitoba, and some others.

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF)
The UMGF is administered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, but applications go through your department or through MHRC. Eligibility for this scholarship includes international students. Besides the Scholarships and Awards, the University also offers a variety of aids for students in need, such as Bursaries, Emergency Loans, Food Banks, and many more. You can find a complete list of financial aids available on the website.

Emergency Loans
These loans can be up to a maximum of $1000 and provide you with a short term relief in financial crisis.

Food Bank
The Food Bank, also called Food Coopearative) is a partnership between UofM, UMSU and Winnipeg Harvest and provides non-perishable food items for students in need. Around Christmas times, they also have food hampers, where students can apply for and obtain a Christmas dinner when they cannot afford it.

Government Student Loan Programs
The provincial as well as the federal governments offer a variety of student loans to help out students in need. GSA Awards

The GSA Awards are awarded once a year through the GSA, please check their website for current information www.umgsa.ca

Conference Grants
Conference grants are available for graduate students attending or presenting at conferences. Applications are available online and at the GSA office, and grants will be disbursed monthly. The application form is available through the GSA website: GSA Awards

Bursaries
The Graduate Students' Association operates a scholarship fund, which disburses awards to students demonstrating financial need and academic promise. The fund is administered through the U of M's Financial Aid and Awards office.

Awards
The GSA also administers the Innovation, Stewardship, and Excellence (ISE) awards. These are one-time awards available to support students without external funding and who have demonstrated excellence in many areas of student life, innovation in their research, and a strong commitment to their community. Applications and award guidelines will be available in the fall on the GSA website, the GSA office, the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and through departmental administrative assistants.

Departmental Grants
Department grants are available to departmental graduate students associations who are represented on the GSA council. Department grants are allocated in two disbursements, one in December, the second in May. Applications are available online and at the GSA office. Qualification for department grants is based on regular attendance at Council, participation in an internal GSA Committee, and completed applications which are due on November 1st and April 1st.

Special project grants
Special project grants are available for projects, events or items which could benefit the graduate student population. Past project have included guest speakers, professional development workshops, and graduate publications. Applications are also available online and at the GSA office, and grants will be disbursed monthly .

Scholarships for International Students

Special scholarships and bursaries for international students are available through the Faculty of Graduate Studies: International Student Scholarships

International Students are also eligible for application to UMGF, MGS, MHRC, and several CIHR Training programs.

Important: If you transition from M.Sc. to Ph.D be aware that your tuition will increase again in the first year (normal tuition + differential fee).

Tax Services - UFile

As part of the Canadian Federation of Students and partner of Ufile.ca, UMSU offers students access to the free tax filing system Ufile. You can sign up for online access and do the taxes yourself, but you can also contact the tax services at UMSU: taxoffice@umsu.ca
